Tongariro Lodge

My husband and I stayed at the Lodge for 3 nights and it was the perfect relaxing, cosy break. We ate in the lodge restaurant each night and the food was incredible - the lamb was our favourite dish but everything we tried on the menu was delicious.

Perfect location and extremely professional service by all the team. Especially from Bobby who exceeded our expectations. The restaurant food was amazing and very quiet place, perfect to relax. Thank you to everyone. Definitely we will Go back again.

Fantastic location and lodge facilities. Food was consistently excellent and staff were genuinely friendly, helpful and attentive. An amazing place to unwind and recharge - fishing at your doorstep and a nice variety of walks - great for the soul.

I would have preferred to put 3.5 because it wasn't average or very good but somewhere in between. On arrival our chalet smelled of fish. Understandably this is trout fishing lodge and I take it someone had possibly tried to dispose of the fish down the insinkorator. I went to reception to ask for a candle but the didn't have, they told me they could move us for one night but we would have to move back the which when you're staying for 2 nights is not an option. You also can't air the space as it's 2 degrees. They offered to send down a room spray which didn't help at all. I had to end up driving to the shops and spending $52 on cleaning products, air neutralizer and candles to get rid of the smell which was not ideal. There is no way that smell could or should have been missed by cleaning crew, it was over powering unfortunately. Grounds are beautiful and our dinner at restaurant was phenomenal.

We enjoyed the peace & quiet this lodge afforded however we did not appreciate the lack of responsiveness and service. Could it be because we visited in their off-season? We made dinner reservations at the lodge for two of our three-nights stay because they recommended we do so. Our first (& turns out, only!) dinner was served by an overwhelmed wait staff. The restaurant only had five other diners, at two tables combined. There was a large party in the cocktail lounge that the wait staff was also serving. Our appetizer arrived before our cocktails, which was a precursor to the remainder of the meal. Thankfully we had water by then. Our meals came from the kitchen at different times, which were not tasty and my mashed potatoes had a terrible ‘sauce’ on them, waaaay too salty. My partner’s steak was low quality & dry. Needless to say, we cancelled the next night’s dinner reservation. Instead we had a fabulous meal at the Hare a Copper, close by. Fantastic food & service plus lovely restaurant ambiance. We reserved two picnic takeaway lunches for our hiking in the national park and were told to pick them up before 5pm. When we appeared at 4:35pm, they acted confused and told us that the chef would happily make our picnic lunches and have them ready in 30-minutes. We declined. However, the $60 picnic charge appeared on our bill at check-out. When we asked for the removal of the charge since we didn’t get the picnic, the woman replied, ‘Well, I will have to trust that you did not get them’ …….like we would lie! Our room was never serviced, despite asking for additional towels & paper products, so we bought our own paper and returned to the reception desk the next days for additional towels. The floor in the foyer & bathroom are soooooo cold. They would do well to heat at least the bathroom floors. We saw online that the restaurant serves breakfast however not while we were there. In retrospect, that is likely to our advantage that we went out for coffee each morning! The outdoor furniture is cheap-plastic-wicker-like material and not comfortable. Hopefully during their busy season, the service & food are adequate. They were terrible for us, sadly.

A real lovely lodge full of character.we were in a chalet which was perfectly comfortable but probably smaller than we expected .Luckily we had a very nice view from our deck .However many of the chalets did not due to trees blocking the view .Some judicious use of a chainsaw would certainly enhance the visitor experience. But the real highlight is the food .both our dinner were just outstanding .in fact the food was the best we experienced on our 6 week tour .the menu is not large. Which is a good sign .But brilliantly executed .The venison ribs which I had both nights is up there with the best starters I have ever had ! Awesome as some might say . Breakfast was again superb .Though self service on cold options might speed the process up . Finally the staff who were lovely and very helpful.

First, restaurant and setting excellent. Room a small but comfortable enough. We felt that the staff could have provided sufficient information to navigate the local activities. IFortunately, we did not take up the hotel's offer of a guide for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (at a cost of $375 per person) ... as there were hundreds of people making the crossing, so a guide is unnecessary for most. Further, the hotel didn't explain the option to drive to the finish car park and then take a shuttle bus to the start point, which saves money and gives flexibility for finishing the walk. For a place of this quality, we would have expected a customer service culture of similar quality.

Beautiful setting by the river with easy access to town and major route from the north, excellent food and attentive staff. We went for fishing and had a extra roomy Villa all to ourselves for several days/ perfect location for hiking and fishing

We are a married couple in our early 50s and stayed at the Tongariro Lodge from 7/11 – 10/11. This was our first time staying at this property, and we were in Chalet #6. Some notes re. our stay: * Location: The property is located ~3 km from the Turangi town center and is well-marked off the SH1. The GPS on our phone guided us in with no problems. It’s a bit far to walk from the Lodge into town, but is an easy 5-minute drive. * Communication: We’d a number of questions in advance of our arrival, and the Lodge was quick to provide detailed responses to our emails. They were especially helpful in arranging a shuttle to/from The Alpine Crossing, which was of tremendous benefit. * Parking: Plenty of secure parking at the Lodge property. There is single-car parking next to each chalet, and there are a couple of “over flow” lots available. * Lodge Décor: The Lodge seems to cater to guests who are there to fish, and it is evident in the décor. Lots of old fishing poles and photos of fishermen adorn the walls, and the construction is of dark wood. There is a wood-burning fireplace in the Lodge that is very inviting. It is “rustic” as opposed to “chic” but in a tasteful manner and nothing is over the top. * Onsite Restaurant: There is a separate bar where you can get a cocktail, as well as a “formal” dining room. Reservations are encouraged, but not required. The dining room is a bit small (~15 tables), the menu is somewhat limited, and we found it a bit pricey. But the food was very good and the portions sizeable. The “breakfast room” is well lit and airy, although the menu is limited. The Lodge offers a box lunch if you are hiking The Alpine Crossing (you need to arrange this in advance), and we took advantage of it. Large meaty sandwiches with plenty of protein-based snacks (fruit, granola, etc)…very good and fairly priced. * Room: We found Chalet #6 to be cozy and plenty big. It is equipped with a queen-sized bed, a single bed (perfect to lay an open suitcase), two (2) nightstands (one on each side of the bed), and a long dresser. A sizeable TV is mounted on the wall, and there are a number of heavy blankets and extra pillows available if needed. The wardrobe is large/spacious and had plenty of room for our items. There is a “nook” as soon as you enter the Chalet which is perfect for dirty boots, hiking poles, wet gear, etc. A large sliding glass door gives way to semi-private deck that overlooks some green space and allows for plenty of natural light. The room locks with private key, and a outdoor light is helpful. There are ample outlets. There is a min refrigerator and coffee/tea-making facilities. We don’t recall seeing a safe. All of the bed linens were fresh and clean. * Bathroom: The two items most important to us in a bathroom are 1) hot water, and 2) good water pressure. Both boxes were adequately checked. The bathroom is of average size with a toilet, a vanity sink with several large drawers, a wall mirror and a towel rack mounted
